Persons entitled to borrow from The ACT Health Library

  • The Canberra Hospital staff
  • ACT Health staff
  • ACT Ambulance Service personnel
  • ANU medical students
  • Fee based registered users


Borrowing procedure

  • You must register with the Library before you can borrow. You will be given a library barcode that  is scanned each time you borrow.
  • To Borrow take your barcode and items to the Loans Desk, during Library business hours, or the Self-Check Out machine after hours.



Conditions of loan


  • Items from the main Library collection including books, clinics, DVDs, and reports may be borrowed for a period of two weeks, with ONE renewal.
  • Staff may borrow up to five (5) items at any given time.
  • Students are able to borrow up to three(3) items at any given time. 
  • Restricted loan items from the Special Reserve Collection are issued for use within the library during business hours.  An I.D. card must be deposited with the loans staff. Special Reserve items are only issued for overnight loan after 4.00 pm and must be back at 9.00 am next business day.
  • Not for loan Items: Reference Collection; Historical Collection and Journals (Photocopying facilities are provided).  


General Loans items

  • The Library imposes fines on all overdue items.
  • All borrowers are given 5 days grace period after the due date. No fine will be imposed if the item is returned within the 5 grace days.
  • Fines accrue at the rate of $0.50 per item per day from the due date.


Special Reserve / Overnight Loans items

  • All overnight Special Reserve items should be returned by 9:00 am the next business day.
  • Fines will accrue at the rate of $1 per hour.


Damage or loss of items on loan

  • Borrowers of items are responsible for any loss, damage or disfigurement and will be required to pay the full cost of replacing or repairing these items.
  • Any item 28 days late is automatically deemed "Lost" and the library will charge a replacement fee. 


Fines and Fees

  • Avoid fines and fees by returning or renewing books on or before the due date, and checking your mail regularly for overdue or recall notices.
  • Fine Payments: You may pay fines in person at the library circulation desk, by cash or cheque made to "ACT Health Library”.
  • When fines reach a total of $5 or more the borrower will be blocked from borrowing, renewing or requesting. This block will remain until the full amount is settled.


Suspension of Borrowing Privileges


Patrons will be blocked from borrowing, renewing or requesting when they have:

  • Fines of $5 or more
  • One or more overdue or recalled books
  • If staff check out more than 5 books.  If students check out more than 3 books.
  • An expired library record
