The Reference Librarian provides training to individuals and small or large groups. Most sessions are held in the Library Training room but sessions can be organised for the Hospital Auditorium or your workplace. Training for individuals or small groups can be customised.

  • Basic Introduction to Library Services.
    Local services - registration, opening hours, loans, photocopying, and pocket PC's
    Offsite services - registration, access to e-resources, flexible borrowing, newsletter.
    What books and journals are available via the library? Find out how to use the catalogue, e-journal and e-books lists.
    Overview of databases available including drug, EBM & guidelines sites.
    Request articles not available via the library.

  • Resources available from the Library website.

    Find out which books, journals, guidelines and databases the library provides access to.

    We’ll show you how to access the library’s electronic resources from home and order articles not available

    from the library.

 

  • Database Searching (PubMed or any of the Ovid Databases – Medline, Cinahl, Embase,  Psychinfo, Cochrane Library, AustHealth & Meditext)

Start your Search. Start with a question and end up with articles. Formulate a search strategy. Learn the difference between searching by word and subject and how to do both. Learn how to combine searches, use limit options, and use the Library resources to obtain full-text articles. Save your search and run it at a later date.

Advanced Searching. Build on the knowledge covered in "Start your Search". Learn how to get the results you want more efficiently. Includes tips, tricks, and shortcuts. Also discussed are other resources that can be used to broaden your search. Learn how to set up alerts and RSS feeds to keep up-to-date with new research.

Evidence Based Medicine and Practice. Find the best evidence available on a topic including reviews, systematic reviews or relevant clinical studies, using evidence-based databases such as the Cochrane Library, UpToDate, DynaMed, Joanna Briggs Institute, Medline, PubMed and Cinahl.

  • Keeping Current.
        Create email topic alerts in the major databases (PubMed, Ovid Medline, Cinahl and Psychinfo).
        Find and create tables of contents alerts that arrive via email or as RSS Feed. 
        RSS Feeds on topics are also available for news and some other websites.
 
  • Reference Management (EndNote)
        Adding references to your Endnote Library, manually and using export options from databases.
        Manage references and libraries, by adding notes, labeling, deleting duplicates and searching.
        Use Endnote to create in-text citations and bibliographies in a chosen style.
